It took me more than a month to get my appointment with my police department. Danforth explained that the firearm licenses used to be granted for life, and when they changed the law in 1998 to require renewals, it required a large group of gun owners who have to get their renewals in the same year. The number of years between renewals has changed several times; it currently is six years, and 2013 is one of the years that group needs to be renewed.

To my surprise, that was the end of the interview. I expected to be asked why I wanted to get a license to carry, but Danforth said the Leominster Police Department's policy is to approve all applications that meet requirements with no restrictions.
I said, "Yes, I have." A decade ago, I was nailed for selling alcohol to a 19 year old friend while at college. I pleaded guilty and paid $365 for my fine and court fees. Danforth said that won't disqualify me. I also received a ticket for speeding while on my way to work in 2009, but Danforth said that won't appear on the background check.
"You can only do what you can do," he said. "If you're in the peak of renewal, plus you have a large number of new applicants, clearly there's only so much one can do."
Each police chief gets to determine if applicants meet "suitability" requirements for the license they want. Some have reputations for being stringent with who they grant a concealed weapon permit to, and may issue restrictions on what kind of firearms the person can possess.
two reference letters from people outside of my family and household.
She calls applicants who pass the background check, notifying them that their license will arrive within a few days. Applicants who fail the background check are sent a certified letter. She said she often gets angry phone calls from those applicants.
My appointment took a half hour and moved fairly quickly. In her narrow office, Danforth asked me whether I had Gucci Belt Kingsnake
At this point I've spent $200 for my application and firearm safety course, and Gucci Dionysus Small Suede
The requirements did not say the letters had to be from Massachusetts residents, but I figured that would improve my odds. I moved to the state a little more than two years ago and was fortunate to make two close friends within a matter of months.
State law requires the background checks to be completed in 40 days or less, but Harris said they are doing the best they can.
Danforth had me give an electronic fingerprint scan. She said the computer was slow because so many people were accessing the system. She said if and when I get my permit, my fingerprint will be needed to purchase a firearm or ammunition or to transfer ownership of one, although the state is switching to a PIN system because of problems reading the fingerprint scan.
Terrel Harris, director of communications for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, said the background checks had averaged 21 days to process on other years, but this year they're taking eight to 10 weeks.
now it's in the hands of the state. I'm about two months into the process, but still not even halfway to the finish.
been convicted of any crime, from felonies to misdemeanors. I was also asked whether I have appeared in court as a defendant in any state for any case besides minor traffic violations. The background check will unearth anything, including offenses that are not supposed to appear on someone's record, sealed records and juvenile offenses.
I also had my photograph and fingerprints taken with the Police Department's equipment. Danforth said if someone is being booked, she has to wait for them to finish using the equipment.
"We are at the peak of the six year renewal," said Harris. Most of the background checks come through his office, except the fingerprints, which are processed by the Massachusetts State Police.
By Michael HartwellOn Tuesday, I had an appointment with Theresa Danforth, firearms licensing clerk for the Leominster Police Department. She prepared my information to submit to the state for a background check. I was required to bring the certificate of completion from the firearm safety course I took in May, $100 in cash, my driver's license, my birth certificate and Gucci Duffle Snake
The purpose of the reference letters is to clue police in about my character. It was a little like having someone sign my yearbook in high school. One friend wrote he's not a supporter of gun rights, but if everyone were as responsible as I, he would change sides on the issue. The other brought up some good deeds Miu Miu Glasses Fashion I have done for her family, such as buying her mother a new French knife because the old one she was using was too dull and presented a hazard.
"We all have the same fiscal constraints as everybody else," said Harris. "It doesn't make sense to have someone go through all this training just to be a temporary worker."
Like Danforth, Harris said there aren't enough resources to hire more staff for the surge in applications and renewals for only one year.
Danforth said she's interviewing about 20 applicants each week, and she submits them to the state in batches of about 40. Besides the long wait in getting an appointment with my police department, the large volume of applicants slows down background checks. She said it takes around 10 to 12 weeks and to expect a phone call from her around Sept. 16.
I was also asked about any mental health problems I might have had or any occasion where I had a firearm permit revoked in the past. Both were negative.
